Causes of Depression:
Depression can be caused by many factors. We use the biopsychosocial model to help understand which areas are affected, assisting mental health professionals in understanding the etiology of illness. For biological factors, we consider a shift in the chemical imbalance in the brain, bringing about symptoms of low mood and lack of energy among other symptoms, we also look into genetics and if there could be any predisposing factor like history of mental illness in the family. Psychological factors include attitude towards life, belief system, coping skills and self esteem and self worth. Social factors include, social interactions with peers, family relationships, work interactions, social economic status, culture and cultural backgrounds. All these factors interact leading to the development of depression.
